Father Steiger assisted by Rev Father Bissen and Rev Gaul. John Fuchshoven, son of Quinn Fuchshoven and wife nee Mannebach, was born in the kingdom of Prussia on Oct 14, 1836. In 1847 he came to America with his parents and lived during the winter following in the vicinity of Lancaster, near Buffalo, NY. The following year the family immigrated west and settled in what soon afterwards became the state of Wisconsin. They made their home in the vicinity of Fond du Lac and he grew to young manhood amid the hardy environments incidental to pioneer life in what was then the Great West. On Sept 14, 1860, he married Mary Stephany Carl and 12 children were born, seven boys and 5 daughters to this union. In 1874 he came to Shelby County, IA, locating near Westphalia in Lincoln Township where he again became a pioneer and did his share in the development of that portion of the state, living there until 1902. When he retired from active farm life and moved to Earling, IA. About one year ago on account of ill health he and his wife went to stay with children living in the vicinity of Fleming, Colorado. Early last winter a tumor developed on one of his feet as the result of having them badly frozen while a young man in the timber country of Wisc. Medical aid was of no avail and his limb was amputated in a final effort to save his life. His advanced age and weakened condition checked his recovery and after receiving the Last Sacraments of the church, he passed away at 9:20 o'clock Monday morning May 30, 1921. He leaves a wife, ten children and host of friends to mourn his death. The children living were as follows: Anna Mary Pimple, Peter and Michael of Fleming CO, Bartel of Crofton NE, William of Earling IA, Anton of Byers, CO, Mary Schwery of Panama, IA, Christina Lefeber of Portsmouth, IA, John of Defiance, IA, and Kate Kirpatrick of Omaha, NE. Bertha, the eighth of the family, died at Westphalia in 1899 and Joseph, the fourth of the family died in Sioux City, Iowa in 1903. John was a pioneer in every sense of the word, spending his life amid the vicissitudes and dangers of the new country. He saw the regions of the western Iowa develop from unproductive boundless prairie where deer and wolves and scattered tribes of Indians roamed, into a land of magnificent promise. The home of thousands, the grainery of the world. Shelby County owes much to John Fuchshoven and others like him who braved the rigors of early pioneer days and blazed the way amid privations on of~times poverty that others coming after him might find the way easier because of their hardships. He was a life long member of the Catholic Church, an earnest and ardent worker for the faith. He helped establish the congregation at Westphalia and did much that contributed to its development. The fruits of his life were not those of riches or honor of office or power, but rather those of love and charity, and self~denial. In the fabric of his life was woven a golden thread, his faith in God and man, that ran to the end and he approached the final hour with serene confidence that is a consolation to all who were with him when the end came....."Tis not the end of such life, to die. For faith, made stronger by his life will live. The paths made wider by his steps lead on. In retrospect, and future lives will give, A blessing and a prayer for this one gone." Internment was made in the St. Joseph Catholic cemetery under the auspices of Branch No 944 of the Catholic Knights of America of which he was a member.
