Description	:	Records show John was living in Council Bluffs at the home of his daughter, Janette (Clayton) Green, following the death of his wife, Alice. He died there in Council Bluffs on 26 April 1925. According to the death certificate, his remains were sent back to Emmetsburg for burial. Evergreen Cemetery records were researched on 24 September 2020 and they show remains have been placed beside those of Alice but the records do not reveal a name or date of burial. He died there in Council Bluffs on 26 April 1925. According to the death certificate, his remains were sent back to Emmetsburg for burial. There is no foot stone for John at this site, but it is reasonable to assume the remains beside his wife are John's. Although his certificate of death shows his birth date as 3 Oct 1845, the correct date is 3 October 1847. His parents, Peter Clayton and Frances Mero were married 26 November 1845 in Grant County, Wisconsin. The 1850 census taken 30 October 1850 shows John as three years old since his birthday is October 3. The 1860 census shows his age as 12 in July (i.e. before his birthday in October); and the 1870 census shows his age as 22 in June ( again, before his birthday). The certificate also incorrectly shows his mother's name as Frances Hartless; her maiden name is actually Mero. She is a daughter of Francois "Frances" Amireau (Mero) and Elizabeth Liebeau, both born in French Canada as was John's mother, Frances. John's father, Peter Clayton, died in 1874 in Liberty, Grant County, Wisconsin; his grave site is not known. His mother, Frances (Mero) Clayton died in Mitchell, Mitchell County, Iowa in 1904; she had been living with her married daughter, Harriet "Hattie" (Clayton) Michaelas. Her burial site is unknown but is most likely in Mitchell where her daughter "Hattie" and son Charles are buried.
