He was born Dec. 21, 1909, in Topeka, to John Francis "Ben" and Catherine Lucille Graham Butler. He attended Assumption Catholic Grade School and graduated from Capital Catholic High School in 1929. He attended Kansas State Agricultural College, where he was affiliated with Phi Kappa fraternity. He worked for Devlin's Grocery Store and Fleming Wholesale Grocers, both in Topeka. He was born Dec. 21, 1909, in Topeka, to John Francis "Ben" and Catherine Lucille Graham Butler. He attended Assumption Catholic Grade School and graduated from Capital Catholic High School in 1929. He attended Kansas State Agricultural College, where he was affiliated with Phi Kappa fraternity. He worked for Devlin's Grocery Store and Fleming Wholesale Grocers, both in Topeka. He served in the Navy during World War II. He was a member of Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church and a volunteer at the church. He was a member of Knights of Columbus and had been active in the Knights of Columbus bowling league for 25 years. He married Virginia Camplin on Aug. 19, 1936, in Topeka. She died in September 1991. Survivors include two sons, Bernard Butler, Manhattan, and David Butler, Burlington Junction, Mo.; a daughter, Judi Lester, Kansas City, Mo.; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church. Billard Post No. 1650 of Veterans of Foreign Wars will conduct graveside services at Mount Calvary Cemetery. Mr. Butler will lie in state after 2 p.m. today at Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home, where a parish rosary at 6:30 p.m. will be followed by a Knights of Columbus rosary at 7 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the building fund at Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church, 1800 S.W.
