Description	:	His name is listed as "Francis Xaver" on the Baptism record of St Anthony church in Klaasville, IN. His Godparents were Franz & Antonetta Pieper (his Uncle & Aunt - siblings of his mother). The following was written in 1990 by his youngest daughter, Bertha, for the Norway, IA book: "The parents of John F. and Anna (Walter) Miller were immigrants from Europe coming to America in the mid 1800's (John's from Germany and Anna's from France). They first settled in New York, Ohio, and Indiana and later moved, by river boat and covered wagon to Iowa (John's to land in the Newhall area and Anna's first in and near Iowa City). After they were married they moved to land south of Norway. Both John and Anna were the fourth of ten children (1867 and 1868). Anna's sisters and brothers all lived to late adulthood. Four of John's sisters and a niece died of diphtheria within a period of two weeks (NOTE: It was about a month) in the early 1800's (NOTE: it was in 1886). John was a teenager, the only one of the children to escape the disease. He moved to the barn and did the farm work. Because of the quarantine and terrible fear of the disease, he also had to make the caskets, dig the graves and bury his sisters and niece (NOTE: the niece was actually a nephew, George A. Boddicker, son of his sister Elizabeth & Richard Boddicker). Another sister died a couple of years later (NOTE: I have found no other sister who died only a couple years later. The next one of his sisters to die was Mary Frances and she died in 1930). John and Anna were married September 26, 1893 in Norway. John operated a Meat Market there for many years. He butchered and processed the meat. In warm weather that was almost a daily chore as blocks of ice was the only method of cooling. Anna rendered the lard on the kitchen stov John also played the violin and accordion for dances in the later 1800's and early 1900's. They were usually held in people's homes and occasionally in the empty hayloft of a barn. Square dances, waltz, polka, and two-step were the popular dances of that era. John and Anna moved to Hancock County, IA in 1914. They bought their first car (Model T Ford) in 1915. In 1928 they moved back to Benton County. John died in 1929 at the age of 62. After Anna moved to Watkins from Norway in the mid 1930's, she spent much of her time stitching quilts, not for herself but for others. She moved to Blairstown in 1956 to live with her son and oldest daughter. Her four children, two grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, their husbands and wives and many other relatives and friends helped her celebrate her 100th birthday in January 1968. She also celebrated the birth of her first great-great-grandchild in January of 1970. She died in May of 1971 at age 103."
