Description	:	John Franklin Arthur was the proprietor of the Redlands Book and Stationery Company located at 9 East State Street. He died on March 23, 1927 at the Redlands Hospital. He was born in Washington, Indiana in October 1857. He was the eldest son of the fourteen children of Mr. and Mrs. James R. Arthur. Mr. Arthur was educated in the schools of Daviess County, Indiana and became a school teacher for many years. Read More	John Franklin Arthur was the proprietor of the Redlands Book and Stationery Company located at 9 East State Street. He died on March 23, 1927 at the Redlands Hospital. He was born in Washington, Indiana in October 1857. He was the eldest son of the fourteen children of Mr. and Mrs. James R. Arthur. Mr. Arthur was educated in the schools of Daviess County, Indiana and became a school teacher for many years. Later he entered business in Washington and was in business there until he moved to California. While in Indiana he was a member of the Odd Fellows and the Knights of Pythias. He made his first visit to California in 1911. In 1917 he disposed of his business interests and moved to Redlands, California. Soon after coming to Redlands he purchased the book and stationery store from G. H. Hunter which then went under the name of Redlands News and Stationery. He later changed the name to Redlands Book and Stationery Company. Mr. Arthur was active in the business life of the community and civic affairs. He was a member of the First Baptist Church and sang in the choir. He was also a member of the Redlands Choral Society. Mr. Arthur was married to Carrie Myers Arthur. He had three children: Franklin K. Arthur, Cecil E. Arthur, and Mrs. Wilbert Acton of Hollywood. He leaves four grandchildren and the following brothers and sisters: Dr. Hamlet Arthur of Hazelton, Ind., Dr. L. M. Arthur of Patoka, Ind., Dr. Maude Arthur, head of the state welfare work on Indiana, Martha Arthur in charge of the school nurse work of Cleveland, Ohio; the Rev. Elijah Arthur of Crawfordsville, Ind.; William Arthur, Austin Arthur, and Mrs. John Chappel of Minden, Nebraska.
