He had been busy about his home during the day and had just finished mowing the lawn about four o'clock, put the mower in its place when his wife persuaded him to stop work for a while and rest. He sat down in a swing east of the house. MRS. HOPKINS was just recovering from a spell of sickness, but was about the house. In a short time she looked out the window and noticing some chickens in the yard which needed attention, she called to MR. HOPKINS, but he did not answer. He was sitting there quite naturally except for the fact that his head inclined slightly and his hand had fallen to one side, but he could not speak. MRS. HOPKINS rushed to him, and read the sad story in an instant. Aid was summoned at once, but life was extinct. MR. HOPKINS was one of the oldest settlers in this part of the country. He came to Lamoni with his parents when the town was first organized, before the railroad was built and has been a continuous resident ever since. Died September 17, 1921, at Lamoni, Iowa, age 66 years, 8 months and 17 days. Moved with parents to Decatur County, Iowa, in 1872 and has been a resident of this county ever since. Was married to ADA HUDSON, January 1, 1878, in Fayette Township. There were born to this union, four children, three of whom have preceded him to the Other Shore. He leaves to mourn his loss, his wife, his son, FLOYD, of Shenandoah, Iowa, who with his wife are present, his aged mother, and one brother, W.A. HOPKINS, of Lamoni, Iowa, besides other relatives. It can be truthfully said of him that everyone who knew him mourns a friend. He was Assessor of Lamoni for over 20 years and so successfully and satisfactorily performed the duties of this office that it was a rare thing for anyone to run against him at the election. He has built a character noted for honesty, fidelity and uprightness, that few of the human family attain to. He became a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in his early years and has been a consistent, faithful member unto death. The funeral was held from the home, Tuesday afternoon, J.F. Garver in charge, F.A. Smith preaching the sermon. --Lamoni Chronicle.
