Description	:	John Franklin McManus was the oldest child of Samuel and Martha Horn McManus. He was born in Edgefield County, SC on Oct 5, 1857. John was just 4 years old when his father enlisted in the CSA army. It was the last time he would see his father. His mother, Martha Horne McManus never remarried and she raised John and his 3 younger siblings by herself. John`s mother raised him and his siblings in the worst time in our nation`s history and she made a living for her children by weaving on an old fashion Spinning Wheel, and knitting socks and... Read More	John Franklin McManus was the oldest child of Samuel and Martha Horn McManus. He was born in Edgefield County, SC on Oct 5, 1857. John was just 4 years old when his father enlisted in the CSA army. It was the last time he would see his father. His mother, Martha Horne McManus never remarried and she raised John and his 3 younger siblings by herself. John`s mother raised him and his siblings in the worst time in our nation`s history and she made a living for her children by weaving on an old fashion Spinning Wheel, and knitting socks and gloves. When John and his brothers got old enough to work, they split rails to build pasture fences and lap boards to cover houses. Martha McManus` adopted son, Leonard Morrow would go to Augusta, Ga in a two horse wagon and bring back jug ware made from clay (jugs, pitchers, bowls, etc) to sell through out the county. They ground their corn and made meal out of the corn. John married Sara Caroline Hollingsworth in Edgefield County, SC around 1878. Their first child, Minnie Lee McManus was born in Oct of 1879. John and Sallie McManus had 5 children over a period of 8 years. Their youngest child, Jim McManus was born in Oct 1887. John Franklin McManus died at the age of 78 on April 5, 1936. He was buried beside his wife, Sara, in Mountain Creek Baptist Church Cemetery in Kirksey, Greenwood County, SC.
