Droste, 89 of Waverly, Iowa, died Tuesday, September 10, 2013, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, in Iowa City. John was born on Jan 24, 1924 in Waverly, Iowa, the son of Arthur Frederick William and Charlotte Anna Carolina (Wilkens) Droste. He grew up in Waverly and graduated from Waverly High School. On April 1, 1945, he was united in marriage to Wynona "Connie" Concannon, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Waverly. John was a busy man working as a dairy farmer, carpenter, and a mail carrier for the United States Post Office. John was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Waverly. He enjoyed spending time with his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. His other passion was his Ayrshire cattle. He was a national cattle judge for over 70 years. He was a lifetime supporter of the Bremer County Fair, the Iowa State Fair and the National Cattle Congress. Since 1935, he only missed attending the Iowa State Fair three different years! John is survived by five children and their spouses, Nancy Kay (Richard M.) Fischer of Clear Lake, IA, Mary Jo (William F.) Hennings of Frankfort, IL, James Paul (Shelley L.) Droste of Worthington, IA, Robert John (Debra S.) Droste of Waverly, and Sherry Rae (Jeffrey D.) Lehman of Denver, IA; 13 grandchildren; 30 great grandchildren; and two sisters, Dorothy Boeckmann and Charlotte (James) Menzel. John was preceded in death by his wife, Connie, in 2004; his parents; and three children, John Frederick Jr., Terry Jane, and Kathy Lynn. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am on Monday, September 16, 2013, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Waverly with Pastor Curt Schneider officiating. Following the service, burial will be in Harlington Cemetery in Waverly. Visitation will be held from 7:00 to 9:30 pm on Sunday, September 15, 2013 at the Funeral Home in Waverly. Memorials may be directed to the family or to the Bremer County 4-H Fair. John Droste has been associated with 4-H since he was 11 years old. He always showed dairy cattle and his woodworking art at the fair. He was an assistant 4-H leader for many years. He continued his activity with the Bremer County Fair and he hopes to continue until 2005. At that time he will have dedicated 70 years to the Fair. For all of his volunteer loyalty a building and shelter at the Fairgrounds has been named “Droste Building” and “Droste Shelter” in his honor. John Droste has been associated with 4-H since he was 11 years old. He always showed dairy cattle and his woodworking art at the fair. He was an assistant 4-H leader for many years. He continued his activity with the Bremer County Fair and he hopes to continue until 2005. At that time he will have dedicated 70 years to the Fair. John Droste told us he usually walked every place he went. He lived just east of the Catholic cemetery on a farm. He was coming home one night from a school function and decided to short cut across the cemetery. He had no qualms walking through the cemetery until one night he walked across some tall grass and he stepped on a rabbit’s nest. The rabbits squealed, started moving under his feet, and John was startled. He headed for home on a dead run!
