According to the source Searsport Sea Captains (1960), John was a ship captain who sailed from Searsport (Waldo County) Maine. Verified by that source, he sailed on the following vessels: the brig Catherine Nickels; the bark J.C. Nickels; the bark Sarah A. Nickels; the bark Lucy Elizabeth; the ship Martin Luther; the ship John Bunyan; the USS Onward (1863). During the War Between the States, Capt. Nickels commanded the USS Onward, purchased by the U.S. Government and sent out to run down Confederate privateers and protect Federal merchantmen. As... As such, he captured the British brig Magicienne attempting to run the blockade of Charleston, South Carolina. Records of the Penobscot Marine Museum in Searsport (Waldo County) Maine verify that Capt. Nichols died in 1899 in Staten Island, New York and is buried in the Elmwood Cemetery, also in Searsport.
