Johnny died June 4, 2019 at Ashley Medical Center. Johnny was born June 18, 1938 to John and Paulina (Zenker) Bender Sr. on his parent’s farm northeast of Ashley, ND. He received his education in a country school and then in Ashley. Johnny was united in marriage to Alice A. Bender on August 28, 1966 at Salem Reformed Church in Leola, SD. They resided on their farmstead seven miles northeast of Ashley where they raised cattle and small grain crops. They moved into Ashley in 1984. Johnny began working for Blumhardt Manufacturing. He also helped his son with mowing lawns and helped his wife, Alice with daycare. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church. Johnny enjoyed going out to the farm and helping his son, Jonathan with various jobs. He liked going to auction sales, playing pool and cards, going for walks, playing checkers with his grandchildren, listening to polka music, and being outside. Grateful for having shared Johnny’s life are his wife of 52 years, Alice; son, Jonathan (Kristi) Bender and grandchildren, Damian and Patty of Ashley and daughter, Linda (Michael) Pfeifle and grandchildren, Christopher and Sara of Ashley. Preceding Johnny in death were his parents, twin sister, Paulina Bender, sister, Esther Walz and brother, Edwin Bender. Honorary Casketbearers will be all the former Daycare children. Casketbearers will be Matt Schlepp, Ben Schlepp, Shawn Goehring, Jesse Goehring, Brayden Salzer, Travis Geiszler, Nick Paulsrud and Reed Eszlinger. Carlsen Funeral Home of Ashley has been entrusted with arrangements.
