Rose Emma Knight Redifer died in California in 1944. Excerpts from a letter written by John Gallatin's sister Emma Isabel Redifer Metteer dated April 15, 1982: "Our family of seven children and Uncle Will's five were all in Maryland. We had a home at Arlington. Mother, when the 2nd World War was on, had some 20 grandchildren and all the boys to see her when off to war. Father and Uncle Will drove horse cars in Baltimore when he met my mother at her home. Her father was an invalid of some years; her mother an expert cook. We came out to California in 1911, first Dad and two boys, then I and two sisters in 1912, and mother that fall. I was 15 years old, sent the four to school and kept house until mother came. Cousins of dad's named Wright, were in Baltimore; also one in Los Angeles had a restaurant, The White Front, by name. I have heard that a relative in New York by the name of Gallatin or Gallager had invented a part of a surveying instrument, and my brother Jack was named after him.
