He was born June 5, 1928, the son of the late John Gayle and Ethel Diggs Walker of Mathews, Va. Mr. Walker's family moved to Norfolk when he was in his teens and following his graduation from Maury High School, he worked 29 years with the Great Atlantic & Pacific Co. A Ghent resident, he was a member of Colonial Avenue Methodist Church. Mr. Walker is survived by his sister, Emma Lee Walker Harrell; his niece, Frances Harrell Howard and her husband Capt. Douglas Howard; his nephews, Gordon Fletcher Harrell and William Bew Harrell; his great-niece, Georgia Lynne Harrell; his great-nephews, Evan Walker Harrell and William Douglas Harrell. He is loved and will be missed by all. Most Popular Articles His family wishes to express their deepest gratitude to the nurses, doctors and staff of Sentara Norfolk General Hospital and the Sentara Nursing Center on Newtown Road, for their skillful and compassionate care of John over his last days. A graveside funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 24, in Providence Cemetery, Mathews, Va., by the Rev. Christina Perkins. A memorial service will also take place at a later date in Norfolk's John Knox Towers, his home for the last 16 years. Memorial contributions may be made to the Mathews Volunteer Fire Department, Mathews, VA 23109. Arrangements are under the care and direction of the Norfolk Chapel of H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts.
