They first settled in Chicago, Illinois and later came to New Salem, North Dakota and took up a Homestead 5 miles Northeast of New Salem. When there were no crops for seven years he would go to Butte, Montana and worked in the coal mine, but in the spring he always returned to put in his crop. They often told their children how the whole neighborhood packed up and went into town when the Indians were on the warpath, and when the danger was passed they returned home again. After proving up his Homestead they moved to a farm closer to town. Here they lived until the year of 1898, when they moved into town. With the help of their family he built their home of brick which came from Sims brick yard as he used to work there and sometimes walked back and forth to work. 11 children were born to the couple: Annie married the late William Backsen, Sr. and spent her entire life in the New Salem area; Louise married the late Fred Kroeger and also spent her entire life in the area, living on a farm North of New Salem; Henry lived most of his life in Waterloo, Iowa; and Fred and Otto both called New Salem home. They are now all deceased. There are three members of the family still living: Emma, (Mrs. Henry Arndt) and Frieda, (Mrs. Charles H. Holle) who both reside in New Salem and William of Atlantic, Iowa. Three children, Caroline, John, and Lydia, died in their childhood. Mr. Geissler was a cement artist and made many nice things out of cement, like flower vases, birdbaths, sidewalk in fences. He was a Mason by trade. He laid the cornerstone of the Friedens Evangelical Church and helped build it and donated all his labor to the church. His wife belong to the Old Ladies Verein for many years. With the help of Carl Schulz, he built the first school in New Salem of stone, and some of the children went to school there. Mr. Geissler carried on his Mason work until his death which was the most horrible catastrophe which took place in this section. All summer he had been engaged at country road work, building bridges and construction work of that character, entailing also the tearing out of old bridges by the use of dynamite, with which he was perfectly familiar. On this occasion all went as usual until, having placed three sticks of dynamite on top of a rock and three under it, they awaited the explosion. The charge on top of the rock went off without effect and they must have thought the one below had been discharged at the same time, for the begin scraping up the dirt under the rock, preparing to place another charge their, when the horrible blast came with fatal effect. One young man was killed instantly and Mr. Geissler was badly injured. He lived four days in the hospital and died on October 7, 1916. Mrs. Geissler lived with her sons, Otto and William for many years and managed her household and garden until two years before she died on March 4, 1943. She was a very friendly woman and until her health failed she enjoyed knitting and making many beautiful things which are children and grandchildren will treasure. Yes, she had faith to the end and we are sure they Good Lord will say, "Well done, good and faithful servant." They had three sons in the service in World War I. Henry was overseas and in battle, Fred was in service in the states, and William, the first man to enlist in New Salem, is one of the youngest veterans of World War I, and also one of the last original Calvary men.
