Description	:	John George Kernahan, eldest son of James and Jennie Beacom Kernahan was born on the home farm eight miles northeast of Oel- wein April 17, 1874, and passed from this life at Mercy Hospital early Monday morning, the 5th of March. During his boyhood he attended the rural schools and at an early age became one of the pioneer farmers of Scott township with his parents on the home farm, later operating his own farm. During his boyhood he attended the rural schools and at an early age became one of the pioneer farmers of Scott township with his parents on the home farm, later operating his own farm. Here he made a host of friends by pleasing manner, integrity and by his willingness at all times to be a good friend and neighbor. In the early nineteen hundreds he came to Oelwein where he engaged in the livery and later on the taxi business. On Nov. 18. 1908, he was united in marriage to Orah Conrad at the home of her parents in Maynard, Iowa. Many years of happy wedded life were enjoyed at their home here in Oelwein where Mr. Kernahan became one of the leading realtors in recent years. In 1919 his niece Zada Kernahan Piersol came to make her home with them and by her loyalty and companionship gave a great deal of happiness to her uncle and aunt. On July 14, 1927. the passing of his beloved wife brought a great deal of sadness into his life. He has since made his home in Oelwein where he maintained a real estate office. Uncle George, as his family all knew him, had enjoyed good health until recently, when failing health, in spite of efforts by loving hands, has taken this friend and loved one. Mr. Kernahan was a member of the Hebron Lodge 374 A. F. & A. M. of the Masonic order of Oelwein and of the Consistory and Shrine of Cedar Rapids, also a member of the Elks Lodge at Oelwein. He leaves to mourn his passing two sisters, namely Mrs. Anna Horning of McGregor Iowa, and Mrs. Isabelle Coogan of Seattle, Wash. Zaida, his niece, now Mrs. Frank Piersol of Waterloo Ia., and his niece, Mrs Geo G Platt east of this city. A sister, Mac, proceeded him in death in 1898 while the familv resided on the home just farm northeast of Oelwein. His father, James Kernahan, a Civil War veteran, died at Washington, D. C., in 1905. His mother Jennie Kernahan departed this life in 1922 at McGregor Iowa His brother, Julius, passed away near this city in 1917 and his youngest brother Dr. A Earle Kernahan, a Methodist minister, departed from this life last fall, at Los Angeles, Calif. In addition he leaves many other relatives and friends who mourn his passing. Funeral services were held at the Hintz Funeral Home on Wednesday, March 7, at 2 p.m. in charge of the Rev. L. W. Hauler. Mrs. J. A. Courtright, accompanied by Mrs. L. E. Hilsabeck, sang. Masonic burial was made at Woodlawn.
