When about 14 years of ago he was confirmed in the Lutheran church at Muscatine, Iowa, by Reverend Oberman. About 30 years ago he joined the M. E . church in Lone Tree, Iowa. In 1880 he married Miss Ida May Hollenbeck. To them were born 10 children, seven daughters and three sons. He leaves to mourn his departure, his wife, Mrs. J. G. Zeigler and nine children, Mrs. Bert Loan of Pleasant Valley township, Mrs. G. Z. Hill, Mrs. J. H . Goodhue and Mrs. Lillian Roberts of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Grace Thompson, formerly of St. Luke’s hospital, Cedar Rapids, but now of Lone Tree, also Mrs. Anna B. Larson, LeRoy, John and William at home. Two grandchildren, Miss Fern Roberts of Cedar Rapids and Willis Larson of Lone Tree and one great grand daughter, Dorothy Prehoda of Riverside, Iowa. One daughter, Nellie Jane proceeded him in death as did also one granddaughler, Mrs. Hazel Prehoda of Riverside, lowa. John G. Zeigler was born in Stubach Bavaria Germany, near Erlange, October I8, 1858. In 1859 he came with his mother, Elizabeth Zeigler und an uncle to America and they made their home with his mother’s aunt, Mrs. Barbara Dorn and husband, in Muscatine, Iowa. In 1874 he set out to learn the blacksmith trade working with Adams and Willes at the Grange factory in Muscatine, la. In 1878 he went to work in Nichols, lowa for John A. Wickey. In 1880 be began working in Burlington, Iowa for John Burgand & Son, wagon makers. From there he returned to Nichols, lowa where he and William Burger bought out J. A. Wickey. Later he left this shop and went to work for Louis Kern, where he remained for nearly three years. On December 14, 1891 he moved to Lone Tree where he took charge of what is now the Menzer Brothers shop, teaching them the trade and working for them at various times since, remaining with them for four years the last time. He also worked at Wellman for Lewis & Klokentaker and at Riverside for H. H. Hansen. He spent two years in West Liberty working for William McCan and Wm. Burger. For a long time he was employed by the windmill factory in Lone Tree, which later became the Zimmerman Steel Company, remaining with them until they moved to Bettendorf. For a while he worked for his friend, Taylor Carlyle at Columbus Junction, with whom he learned the trade. In 1910 and 1911 he took charge of a shop at Mclntire, Iowa, later returning to Lone Tree. In 1919 and 1920 he took charge of another shop in Freeborn, Minnesota after which he again returned home. In April 1923 he went to work for Frank Gibson and son of Iowa City, but in July of that year he was forced to retire on account of poor health. On the 16 day of Nov. while shucking corn for Lacey Brinkmeyer, he went blind almost instantly in the left eye, as cataract being the cause. Since that time he has worked for Charlie Smith at Hills, but had to give up because he could not see to work. In 1926 lie bought a shop in Gladwin but about four months ago he was forced to give up on account of poor health. The above obituary as handed to the Reporter editor and it was requested that we print this one instead of the one read at the funeral Sunday afternoon. It was the wish of John G. Zeigler that the above obituary be printed. Shortly after he lost his eyesight in the one eye in 1923, Mr. Zeigler came to the Reporter editor and asked us to type write several copies of a summary of his life’s work as a blacksmith and laborer. This we did and the larger part of that which preceeds this article was compiled by John G. Zeigler himself who stated that after he had died, he wanted the members of his family and his friends to know how he had spent his life. The funeral service was held from the M. E. church at two o’clock Sunday afternoon and despite the inclement weather, was attended by a large number of people. Rev. C. C. Goltry had charge of the service and music was rendered by a quartette consisting of Forrest Atkin, Myra Huskins, Iva Storm and Cloyce Loehr with Mrs. Eflie Atkin at the piano. Mrs. Herman Wiese and Mrs. Howard Huskins had charge of the many beautiful flowers. Interment was made in the local cemetery. The following were pallbearers: W. E. Lutz, J. D. Musser, Frank Menzer, John Menzer, James Ramer and George Wall. The editor of this paper offers sympathy to the sorrowing relatives.
