Maas), John Ficken, Emma Ficken Lark, Johanna Sophia Ficken Plath, William Ficken, and Herman Ficken. John Gerhart served in Franco Prussian War of 1871, participating in the taking of Paris. He settled in Lyons, IA when he immigrated in 1873. He met Katharina there and in the fall of 1874, they traveled to Ogden, IA. Their daughter Johanna told the story that they had agreed to travel on until they found a town that needed a blacksmith, John's profession. At Ogden, Katharina recognized a friend from Germany while waiting in the general store for John to come back from seeking work. Katharina asked him whether Ogden had need of a blacksmith. The town had a blacksmith but there was a group of farmers northwest of Iowa who needed a blacksmith. John was offered a small section of land if he would open a blacksmith shop there, which he did. On this section of land, John and Katherine raised a family, as did their son William. After his death, John's daughter Johanna's son Lyle purchased the farm and raised his family there before retiring and moving to Ogden.
