He was born in Koshockton county, Ohio, near New Castle, residing there until 1845 when he moved to Illinois, remaining there one winter and then going to Lee county, Iowa. Here he was united in marriage to Jane Milligan. To them was born one daughter but death soon claimed both wife and child. June 15, 1856 he again married Susan Hull who ever proved a true and faithful companion. She preceded him to that better country about two months ago. He and his bride of a few weeks started to Kansas arriving at his late home July 17 of the same year. To this union were born three sons and seven daughters. The sons and five daughters are left to mourn the loss of a loving father. He had been a member of the Christian Church about thirty years. The funeral was held at New Harmony church on Friday, Rev. W.A. Oldham officiating. The Holton Recorder, April 17, 1902. By the death of John Gibeson which occurred at his home on Bills Creek, southeast of this city, April 9, the oldest settler of that portion of Jackson County passed away. Mr. Gibeson has been an invalid for many years, and for this reason not strongly identified in the more recent events in history of this county, but at that point when settlers were few and far between and the work of development slow but sure, his name and home were widely known, and he was esteemed as a neighbor and respected as a citizen. John Gibeson was born in Coshocton County, Ohio, near New Castle and at the time of his death was 81 years, 2 months and 28 days old. He lived in Ohio until 1845 when he moved to Illinois, remaining there one winter and then going to Lee County, Iowa. Here he was united in marriage to Jane Milligan. Unto them was born one daughter, but death soon claimed both wife and child. June 15, 1856 he was married to Susan Hull, in Iowa and a month later, July 17, 1856, he and his wife arrived in Kansas, taking up a homestead on the land where he has ever since resided and where he died. His long and faithful companion preceded him to that better home only about two months. To them were born three sons and seven daughters. the sons and five of the daughters are still living to mourn the loss of an affectionate father. About thirty years ago Mr. Gibeson united with the Christian church and was a faithful follower of the principles of christianity. The funeral was held on Friday, April 11. A short service was held at the residence and the remains then taken to the New Harmony Church, where Rev. W. A. Oldham, of this city, preached the funeral sermon.
