Description	:	American Revolutionary War Continental Army Brigadier General. The son of a carpenter, at age four he moved with his family to Marblehead, Massachusetts after his father's death, and became a merchant and ship owner. Following the Boston Massacre in March 1770, he was elected to a position on the Marblehead's Committees of Correspondence. In 1775 he became a lieutenant colonel in the 21st Massachusetts Regiment and commanded the unit after the death of Colonel Jeremiah Lee. The son of a carpenter, at age four he moved with his family to Marblehead, Massachusetts after his father's death, and became a merchant and ship owner. Following the Boston Massacre in March 1770, he was elected to a position on the Marblehead's Committees of Correspondence. In 1775 he became a lieutenant colonel in the 21st Massachusetts Regiment and commanded the unit after the death of Colonel Jeremiah Lee. He participated in the Siege of Boston in June 1775 where General George Washington charted his vessel Hannah to raid British supply ships. In September 1776 he was instrumental in evacuating General Washington's army from Long Island, New York, as British Lieutenant General Sir William Howe's forces were closing in. Three months later, his unit assisted Washington's army across the Delaware Diver on their surprise attack and victory at Trenton, New Jersey. He then returned home to attend to his sick wife but rejoined the war a few months later and was promoted to the rank of brigadier general. He served in the successful Saratoga Campaign (June to October 1777) and the Battle of Rhode Island in August 1778. He then spent the remainder of the war along the Hudson River, guarding against British forces moving up from New York City. In 1782 he retired from the Army returned to Marblehead where he served in the Massachusetts Legislative Assembly and on the town council. In September 1783 he was brevetted a major general for his service during the American Revolutionary War. He died of hepatitis at the age of 64. A statue in his honor resides on the Commonwealth Avenue Mall in Boston, Massachusetts.
