The Spencer Advocate (NE); Thurs., 23 June 1932; page 1 John Gottfried Ernst was born in Bardenberg, Germany, Nov. 8, 1857, and passed away at his home in Spencer, June 14, 1932, at the age of 74 years, 7 months and 6 days. He came to America about 1886. He was married to Josephine Connot on October 16, 1888, at Madison, Nebr., and they made their home in Newman Grove until 1893 when he took a homestead in Boyd county, five miles north of Spencer where they lived until 1924 when they moved to Spencer. They were among the very earliest settlers, before a railroad was built here, when O'Neill was the nearest railroad town. The hardships of the very early days were passed thru safely. The friendships, and the sincerity taught by the early days gave to him that famous pioneer spirit which has won for him many loyal friends all thru the following years. With his retirement to Spencer, he took great pleasure in his home, where he spent practically all of his time, helping at the house, tending the garden and running errands. He was a good husband and father and famed as a neighbor and friend. He leaves his loving wife, four daughters: Mrs. F. Stevens of Madison; Mrs. J.J. Loukota of Gross; Mrs. C.J. Wondra of Wood, S.D.; and Mrs. L.D. Manzer of San Diego, Calif.; one son, John, of Detroit, Mich.; one brother in Wichita Falls, Texas; two sisters in Germany and 12 grandchildren. Services were held from the St. Mary's church in Spencer, with Rev. Felix Gebauer officiating. Burial was made in the Catholic cemetery near Spencer.
