Dec 20, 1923 - Carroll Times - Another of the old landmarks of Carroll and vicinity has been removed by death in the passing of John Gottfried Loebel last Saturday morning. Deceased came to Carroll in the year 1878 and this city had ever since been his home. He was a carpenter and contractor by trade, and for a number of years was employed as custodian of the city hall. For a period of 45 years he served faithfully, as a member of the Carroll Fire Department and at the time of his death was an honorary member of that organization. At the funeral Monday the fire boys in full uniform attended the services in a body as a last token of respect to one who had been faithful in the service. John Gottfried Loebel was born May 18, 1841, in Brunn, Germany. His parents were Mr. and Mrs. John George Loebel. On the day of his confirmation he left his home to come to the United States. He landed on our shores April 9, 1864, and went directly to Milwaukee where he made his home. On October 20, 1873, he was married to Miss Bertha Kantz. For one year they resided in Chicago, then moved to Milwaukee where they lived until 1878. In 1878 they came to Carroll where they lived ever since. This union was blessed with six children, of whom four died in infancy. On October 20 ot this year they celebrated their golden wedding anniversary. After much suffering, especially during the last months, he fell asleep Saturday morning, tired, weary, and worn, having attained the age of 82 years, 6 months, and 27 days. Funeral services in charge of Rev. A.J. Mueller were held Monday afternoon at the Lutheran church, of which denomination he was a lifelong member. He leaves to mourn his death his wife, Mrs. Bertha Loebel; two daughters, Mrs. Anna Hanna of Detroit; and Mrs. Minnie Budden, of Carroll; one son-in-law, Everett Budden, of Carroll; eight grandchildren; and many other near relatives and a host of sympathetic friends. Relatives of Mr. and Mrs. Loebel from out of town who attended the funeral of Mr. Loebel were Emil Burow, of Sioux City; Mr. and Mrs. Charles Burow, Mrs. Bertha Pierce, Messrs. Walter, Frank, and Louis Burow, of Battle Creek, Ia.
