Description	:	"Early on the morning of April 3, 1868, John Griesinger and his twin sister Mary were born to George and Mary (McQuilling) Griesinger. The mother Mary did not survive after the birth. She also left another daughter, Ada, who was two years old. The babies weighed a little over a pound each and Grandma McQuilling (Anna Marie Schlappi) placed them between two pillows to take them to her home where she raised them thru childhood. At the age of 16, Mary was stricken with a fever. On her asking the doctor when she would die, she was told - 'when the leaves on the tree outside were as large as rabbits ears.' She would ask her father or brother to bring her a leaf and would grow impatient that they took so long, little realizing that they must now search longer to find a small leaf. When all the leaves were mature, she did indeed die, June of 1885. She was laid to rest beside her mother in the Salisbury Cemetery. John's father married Lydia Siegel October 13, 1870. He owned a saw mill at Mt. Pleasant and when John was old enough, he went home to saw timber and dig out the stumps to make the land farmable. On April 4, 1889, John and Addie Westbrook, daughter of George and Phebe (Williams) Westbrook, were married. He began farming on a farm north of Delta, across from his grandparents, who had reaised him. This farm was owned by Allen Trowbridge who had purchsed it from Willard Trowbridge August 30, 1869. John and Addie became the parents of four children: La Vern (Mrs. Arthur Shambarger), Marvin, who married Louise Bowerman, Ora who married Alma Brown and later Bertha MIler, and Gladys (Mrs. Howard McBride). When the Hevetia Milk Co. opened in 1903, John was one of the first to deliver his milk by horse and wagon. He became one of the Helvetia's largest milk producers. After twenty years of renting the farm, the Griesingers purchased it in 1911 from Allen Trowbridge, who lived in Delta in the first house east of the City Hall. An interesting document of this transaction says, 'For a valuable consideration to me paid by Allen Trowbridge, I John Griesinger do hereby covenant and agree to deliver to said Allen Trowbridge, each year during his life, ten cords of stovewood and to place same in said Trowbridges' wood house at Delta, Ohio; that I will deliver to said Trowbridge ten bushels of potatoes and place them in his cellar, that I will furnish milk for his family as I have done, all items in the manner and amounts as I have done in the past. In wetness werhe of I have hereunto set my hadn this 20th day of Jun, 1911. [signed] John Griesinger.' July 9, 1925 Addie passed away, suffering from cancer and diabetes. Her resting place being Greenlawn Cemtery, Delta, Ohio. John continued farming with the help of his daughter Gladys working in the home. When the work proved too much for her, Mary Godden, a neighbor girl was hired. On November 3, 1926 John and Mary were married. They had four children: Florence (Mrs. Steven Nash), Flossie who died at birth, Charles who married Ella Bovie and later Ruth Pecklem, and Kenneth who married Sheila Lyons. On Jun 29, 1929 John and Mary Griesinger gave the Village of Delta an option to purchase 70 acres for $115.00 an acre for the construction of a reservoir. The transaction was completed September 5, 1930. John's rheumatism had progressed to the point that he gave up farming, held an auction, called by Lewis Ryan, in 1937. The farm was rented and later sold to Robert Steadman in 1942. The family moved to the Godden home. Mary died Apr 9, 1958 and John January 29, 1959 due to a stroke at the age of 90 years and 9 months. Both are buried in Greenlawn Cemetery, Delta, Ohio."
