On that certificate, his place of birth was also given as Kendallville, Indiana, but that was crossed out, and Ormanville, Iowa, was written in. Ormanville has been incorrectly transcribed as Ottumwa in the ancestry.com summary, but by looking at the certificate, it may be seen that it is Ormanville. Ormanville has been incorrectly transcribed as Ottumwa in the ancestry.com summary, but by looking at the certificate, it may be seen that it is Ormanville. In all of the census records, John was shown as being born in Iowa. John married Ella Johnson on March 6, 1897, in Wapello County, Iowa. On that marriage record, John's birth place was shown as Floyd County, Iowa. In the 1870 Census for Union, Floyd County, Iowa, John H. Kendall, age 3, was living with his parents, Francis M. and Elen [sic] Kendall. In the 1895 Iowa Census, residents were asked to state what county they were born in. On that census, John's place of birth was shown as Wapello County, Iowa. I do not know for certain where John was born, so I have just used Iowa on this memorial. Also note that John's date of birth in both his death certificate and his obituary was given as September 14, 1866, and the year on his gravestone is 1867. --------------- Obituary From "Ottumwa Daily Courier," Thursday, April 29, 1943, Page 12: JACK KENDALL. Kendall, 76 [sic], who died Thursday at his home at 713 East Mill street, will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Traul funeral chapel, in charge of the Rev. C.R. Reed of the Willard Street Methodist church. Burial will be in Shaul cemetery. He was born September 14, 1866 [sic], in Kendallville, Ind., the son of Francis and Ellen Kendall, and came to Ottumwa as a boy. His wife is dead. He is survived by six daughters, Mrs. Hazel H. Caldwell of Tulsa, Okla., Mrs. Gladys Mulchy of Des Moines, Mrs. Vivian Cravatzo of Ottumwa, Mrs. Jeanette Lang of Des Moines and Mrs. Helen Rosendahl of Muskegon, Mich.; two brothers, Jake Kendall of Ottumwa and Al Kendall of Rock Island, Ill.; four sisters, Mrs. Stella Bashore of Ottumwa, Mrs. Della Rollison of Davenport, Mrs. Viola Shoemaker of Oklahoma, Mrs. Louellen Dilly [sic] of Ottumwa, and 15 grandchildren. The body will remain at the Traul chapel until time for the funeral.
