Born Sept. 4, 1939, near Noble, he was the son of Emery O. and Effie Lavina Roth Liechty. On Oct. 18, 1959, he married Gretchen Suzanne McDowell in Oakland Mills. Mr. Liechty worked for several area carpenters. In 1985, he formed Liechty Construction Co. He attended Stringtown and Eicher grade schools and was a 1957 graduate of Wayland High School He played end on the Wayland High School Bombers eight-man football team and received state honorable mention. He was a former member of the Carpenters Union. He was named Carpenter of the Year several times by the Mount Pleasant News. He was a member of First United Methodist Church, where he served on numerous boards, most especially the board of trustees. He was active with Mount Pleasant Little League. He coached all of his boys, served on the Little League Board and helped build the fields. He was a member of the Mount Pleasant High School Booster Club, where he volunteered much of his labor to build the press boxes, field house and dugouts. He was a fan of the St. Louis Cardinals and Iowa Hawkeyes. He loved to tend to the cattle he raised and to mow and bale hay. He also loved John Deere tractors. He raised boxers and enjoyed mushrooming with his wife. Survivors include his wife; four sons, John Emery Liechty, Todd Phillip Liechty, Timothy Beryl Liechty and Jason Forrest Liechty, all of Mount Pleasant; 17 grandchildren; two great-granddaughters; and one sister, Rosemary Shumaker of Wayland. He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister and one brother. Visitation will be from noon to 9 p.m. today at Weir & Kimzey Funeral Home in Mount Pleasant, where the family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. The funeral for Mr. Liechty will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at First United Methodist Church in Mount Pleasant, with the Rev. Edward R. Peterson officiating. Burial will be in Forest Home Cemetery. Memorials have been established for First United Methodist Church, the Mount Pleasant High School Athletic Program and cancer research.
