After that he hauled timbers for the building of the first wagon bridge across the Neosho, on the Merchant street road, and helped trim out the trees and underbrush for the Allen creek bridge. Then, with two yokes of oxen he got another job, hauling ties for the M-K-T railroad, which was making its way down the Neosho valley from Junction City. He hauled the ties from Bluff creek, northwest of Americus, and scattered them between Americus and Dunlap. In the spring of 1870 the Santa Fe came along and gave John Love another job, between Badger creek and Lang, and the big pile of rock he helped haul out of the deep cut near Lang still lies along the right of way. After that job John Love hauled bridge timber, this time with six mules, for the Santa Fe from Reading to the Neosho river bridge. In 1872 John Love's father went to Wellington and took claims for himself and his son, and after a while he wrote for the family to come. John took his mother and sister and younger brother down there, but they stayed only a month. During that time he went with his father and some men from Burlingame on a buffalo hunt southwest of Wellington. Four buffaloes were killed, and John Love was proud of the fact that his shot brought down one of them. Broke Prairie With Oxen. John Love drove an oxen team back to Lyon county, and in the summer of 1873 he broke prairie with his oxen, at $2.50 an acre, and some days turned two acres of sod. In 1874 he farmed his father's place. By plowing furrows around his corn field dragging a big log through the middle of the furrows, he save his corn from chinchbugs, only to lose most of it later to the grasshoppers. Later that year he and another man worked at putting up hay at Lang, Dunlap and near Howard. Returning to Lyon county, Mr. Love worked at various other jobs, including driving a team to a thrashing machine, hauling logs to a sawmill and breaking prairie, always managing to earn his own living and to help his family at a time when many of the Kansas settlers were receiving aid from other states. In 1878 Mr. Love married Mary C. Main. They lived in Reading for a year, and Mr. Love did carpenter work. In 1879 he bought raw land on Badger creek, six miles east of Rinker, and improved it. There Mr. and Mrs. Love's family grew up. In addition to his farming, Mr. Love continued to do carpenter work, and built many houses and barns. In earlier years he had studied music, and he taught classes at Badger creek, Forest Hill, the Jacob and Scott schoolhouses, Reading and Arvonia. Mr. Love played in Colonel Whitley's Old Fiddlers' contests, and once won a first prize in a contest at Neosho Rapids. Mr. Love was for several years superintendent of a Sunday school at Union school house. He was a member of the school board of his district for years and also served as road overseer.
