Description	:	John was born in Mercer County, Pennsylvania. During the Civil War, he served in the 100th Pennsylvania Infantry and was wounded in the battle of Weldon Railroad. After the war, he moved to the Kirksville (Adair County) area of Missouri where he met and married Maranda Graham. In 1892, they came to western Kansas and homesteaded near Hoxie in Sheridan county. After he proved up on the claim, he sold the land. He served on the City council and was a member of the Grand Army of the Republic and the Oddfellows lodge.
