Description	:	John H. "Pete" James Sr, 87, of rural Fort Madison, IA, passed away on Friday, July 10, 2009 at 8:43 PM at the Ft. Madison Community Hospital surrounded by his loving family. He was born on November 9, 1921 in Kentucky to Samuel and Mae Byrd James. He married Mary Montgomery in 1942, she preceded him in death. John then married Ann Leafgreen on September 20, 1980 in Ft. "Pete" James Sr, 87, of rural Fort Madison, IA, passed away on Friday, July 10, 2009 at 8:43 PM at the Ft. Madison Community Hospital surrounded by his loving family. He was born on November 9, 1921 in Kentucky to Samuel and Mae Byrd James. He married Mary Montgomery in 1942, she preceded him in death. John then married Ann Leafgreen on September 20, 1980 in Ft. Madison. John worked numerous years at Sheaffer Pen Co. as a Tool & Die Maker, retiring in 1985. He was a member of Sacred Heart Church where he was a former member of the Parish Council and an usher. He also volunteered countless hours for his church. He served in the US Army during WWII in the 738th Army Field Artillery Battalion. He was a lifetime member of the VFW. John and Ann moved to the country in 1984 and he renovated the entire home after his retirement. He enjoyed his morning coffee at Hy-Vee with his friends but most of all he loved helping his friends and family with any project they had going. Survivors include his wife, Ann James of rural Ft. Madison; two daughters, Mary (Richard) Chapman of rural Donnellson and Pat (Duane "Chuck") McDowell of LaHarpe, IL; four grandchildren, Tami Ballard of Burlington, Trisha (Steve) Getz of Warsaw, IL, Ron Thompson of Wisconsin & Jeff Thompson of Mt. Pleasant; six step grandchildren; nine great- grandchildren and eleven step great- grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, first wife; one son, John H. James, Jr.; one sister, two brothers, 2-step brothers and his beloved dogs, Bonnie #1, Cissy, Sandy & Skyler.
