Portwood was born in Macon County, Illinois, on 21 Apr 1856, and died at his home in DeKalb County, near Cameron, Missouri, on 26 Jul 1906, being 50 years, 4 months, and 5 days old. He was the son of William and Elizabeth Portwood, he being the eldest of his father's second marriage, having three half sisters and one half brother and two own brothers--one of each dying while young, one half sister, Mrs. Nancy A. Attebery of Davis City, Iowa, and his only brother, J.M. Portwood of Moweaqua were at his bedside as was his second wife and their three youngest children, Ruth, Charles, and Cleo, and a few kind friends to watch his spirit depart. He told his wife and children how to arrange his funeral and what to do with his property, also to attend religious service, and meet him in Heaven, as though he were going to his farm work. He was married twice--his first marriage occurring on the 6th of Sep 1877 to Elizabeth Culver in Macon County, Illinois. To this union were born five children--Florence, Everett, Lois, Ruth, and Charles. The mother dying near Edgar, Nebraska, on 6 February 1894, and the eldest daughter, Florence, dying a little over one year later. Everett is in the U.S. Army in the Philippines, Lois is Mrs. C.O. Holden of Edgar, Nebraska, and Ruth, Charles, and Cleo are at home. He was married a second time on 6 Jan 1898 in Macon County, Illinois, to Emma E. Ward, who is left to mourn the loss of a kind husband and to care for their younger children. He was converted in Christ in 1876 under the preaching of Jas. Crowder and Elder Morgan of the Methodist Episcopal Church and obeyed his Lord in Baptism by being immersed. He was a member of the Odd Fellows Star of Hope Lodge, and was also a member of the A.O.U.W. and the M.W.A. A short funeral service was rendered by Rev. C.O. Mills of the M.E. Church of Cameron, assisted by the Odd Fellows on Saturday evening and escorted to the train at Cameron from whence he was shipped to Edgar, Nebraska, for burial which was to take place on Sunday morning, 29 Jul 1906 at ten o'clock, accompanied by his wife and three youngest children, and her brother, Charles Ward, of Decatur, Illinois. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Credits to Becky Roorda from St. Louis, Missouri.
