Description	:	Benson County Farmers Press Funeral services for John Hager, 72, longtime Minnewaukan area resident, will be held Thursday, Feb. 5 at 10 a.m. from the St. James Catholic Church in Minnewaukan with the Rev. Fr. George Krile celebrant of the Mass. Interment will be in the spring at the St. James Catholic Cemetery, Minnewaukan. Mr. Hager died at his home on Sunday, Feb. 1. Mrs. Steve (Cheryl) Larson will be organist and she will also accompany the St. James Church Choir. John Hage was born May 22, 1908 on the family farm near Selz in Pierce County, the son of John and Eva Lyons Hager. He married the former Emma Grossman at Selz on June 28, 1926. Shortly after their marriage, the couple moved to the Minnewaukan area where they continued to farm. John was inducted into the U.S. Army on March 3, 1944 and received his honorable discharge as a WWII veteran on November 5, 1945. He returned to his family after his discharge and began employment with the Benson County Highway Dept. Mr. Hager had been a 35 year employee with the Highway Dept.; that tenure included his semi-retirement duties since 1973. His last position with the Highway Department had been the grading foreman.Mrs. Emma Grossman Hager died March 13, 1972 and Mr. Hager later married the former Verna Avis on Sept. 20, 1974 at Minnewaukan. Mr. Hager's affiliations included the American Legion of Minnewaukan; the Eagles Club and the Knights of Columbus, both of Devils Lake; and also a longtime member of the St. James Catholic Church, Minnewaukan. Survivors include his wife, Verna; four sons, Gene of Minnewaukan, James of Salmon,Idaho, donald of Udall, Kans., and John, Jr. of Jamestown; seven daughters, Mrs. Rancel (Elizabeth) Stensby and Mrs. Tim (Dorothy) Parrish, both of Minnewaukan, Mrs. Peter (Bernice) Vetsch of Anamoose. Mrs. George (Helen) Bragg of Medford, Ore., Mrs. Irene Doran of Fargo, Mrs. Raymond (Kathryn) Nelson of Devils Lake and Mrs. Dennis (Carol) McGuire of Pillsbury; two step-sons, Clarence and Edward Avis, both of Rushville, Neb.; one step-daughter, Mrs. Pat Schwarting of Iowa City, Iowa; 55 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren. He was the last surviving member of the John and Eva Hager family. Mer. Hager was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Emma; two daughters, Jane and Isabel; one grandson; three brothers; and four sisters.
