THE BODY IS STILL BEING SEARCHED FOR Accident Occurred Early This Afternoon - Working On U. T. Grade. ---------- John Hagner, aged 42 years, a wellknown farmer living near Millville, was drowned this afternoon at 1:30 o'clock when he fell off the temporary trestle work being build across Blue river, about two hundred feet northeast of the Mt. Summit pike bridge. Hagner, along with Charles Lowery and a gang of men, was at work on the trestle, and the river, badly swollen by the torrential rains of the past twenty-four hours, was within ten inches of the work and the current very swift. It is presumed Hagner became dizzy as a result of looking at the swirling water and lost his balance. He fell into the raging torrent without warning and was quickly washed away. His body soon disappeared and a search for it was started immediately. Hagner had a wife and four children and was wellknown in Newcastle, having worked around here for years. He owned an eight-acre farm east of the city. (This article was edited.) WAS BORN IN GERMANY Drowned Man Came To America In 1898 - Had Just Renewed A $1000 Life Insurance Policy. ---------- All efforts to locate the body of John Hagner, aged 35, who fell off the temporary bridge of the Fisher-Welch Construction company over Blue river, north of the city, Monday afternoon, have been without avail. The additional rains of Monday night have made it impossible to search in the deeper parts of the stream and it is thought it will be impossible to locate the body before the flood recedes. He was on a drift on the north side of the bridge when he lost his balance and fell into the roaring stream. His body came up in a few seconds, fifteen or twenty feet south of the bridge. Hagner was apparently making an effort to swim, but the current drew him under. The second time he came up he was on his back and made several strokes before he again disappeared. The third time his body was seen he only threw up one hand before being drawn under for the last time. Mr. Hagner was a native of Germany, having come to this country in 1898. He came directly to Henry county where he has resided ever since. A few years after coming here, he was married to Miss Airie Shaffer, daughter of Adam Shaffer and wife, who was killed by a Pennsylvania train at the Stout crossing a few years ago. After his marriage, he lived on a farm northeast of the city for several years. He then purchased property on North Twelfth street and moved to the city about six years ago. He afterward moved back to the farm where he continued to live until he returned to the city a few months ago when he moved to the property directly across the track from the L. E. & W. depot. He is survived by his wife, three sons, Alie, Jesse and Will, one daughter, Marie, his mother, Mrs. Margaret Hagner of New Lisbon, two sisters, Caroline Leonard of New Lisbon, Josie Neill of Indianapolis, and one brother, Chris Hagner, living east of the city. It was learned today from H. H. Evans that Hagner had life insurance to the amount of $1000. Evans said that Hagner came to him last December and told him that he believed he would drop the insurance on which he had three payments. Evans said he advised him to keep it up and on January 13 Hagner made another payment. (This article was edited.) Published March 26, 1913 - New Castle Daily Courier, New Castle, IN WAS HAGNER A SUICIDE? Drowned Man Sent His Wife A Knife And Three Dollars In Money. WILL BE INVESTIGATED Prosecutor Has Asked Coroner To Probe Matter - Body Has Not Yet Been Recovered. ---------- It developed this morning that John Hagner, who was drowned Monday afternoon, probably committed suicide. Several clues pointing in that direction were brought to light this morning. It developed that Hagner had fallen in the river twice and after being pulled out the first time had taken a knife and $3 from his pocket and had given them to Charles Lowery, his foreman, with instructions to give both the knife and money to his wife. He later fell into the river again and was drowned. Prosecutor Evans has notified Coroner Weaver of Kennard that when the body is found that he would like to have an investigation. It was hinted this morning that the suicide theory was started to cover some larger crime. Shortly before noon today Mr. Hagner's rain coat containing his pipe and tobacco was found near the place he fell in, but men who worked in an effort to locate the body Monday say the coat was in the same place Monday. It is evident Mr. Hagner removed the rain coat shortly before he got down on the drift to work. (This article was edited.) Published April 21, 1913 - New Castle Daily Courier, New Castle, IN HAGNER'S BODY FOUND TODAY Henry McWhorter And Sam Tambas Accidentally Ran Onto Drowned Man. NEAR WHERE HE FELL ---------- Henry McWhorter of the Bundy cigar store, and Sam Tambas, the Greek shoe shiner in the same establishment, found the body of John Hagner, who was drowned in the flood north of the city, March 24, this afternoon about 3 o'clock. The two men were taking a walk along the grade of the Muncie extention of the Honey Bee and came onto the body accidentally. It was not far from the place where Hagner fell into the swollen stream, and in a place which it was thought had been well searched. The body was brought to the Stanley morgue where it was prepared for burial. EAGLES OFFERED REWARD The Lodge Meets Tonight And Likely That Matter Will Be Disposed Of And Money Paid. ---------- Coroner Weaver of Kennard has not yet made a statement concerning the death of John Hagner on March 24, but is conducting an investigation of several details of the tragedy surrounding the man's death, which has not been all together cleared up. However, it is understood that the coroner will file a finding on the theory that Hagner met death by accidental drowning. The body was held in the Stanley morgue until this afternoon at 1:30 o'clock when it was taken to the German Baptist church cemetery, west of Hagerstown, for burial. Several Eagles accompanied the body to the city limits. Short services were held at the grave. A memorial service was held at the Chicago church near Hagerstown on Sunday, April 18. The matter of the reward offered by the Eagles lodge for the recovery of the body will be taken up at the regular meeting of the lodge tonight. The reward offered was $100 and it will in all likelihood be divided between McWhorter and Tambucos. (This article was edited.)
