Description	:	Past director of the Chelan-Douglas Health District, John Hampton Garmany, Jr., passed peacefully at the age of 93, on March 1, 2017, with his family by his side. His passing followed the loss of his dear wife of 44 years, Quinn Firman Garmany, on April 18, 2016. John grew up in Pensacola, FL, where his father was the President of Gulf Oil. Read More	Past director of the Chelan-Douglas Health District, John Hampton Garmany, Jr., passed peacefully at the age of 93, on March 1, 2017, with his family by his side. His passing followed the loss of his dear wife of 44 years, Quinn Firman Garmany, on April 18, 2016. John grew up in Pensacola, FL, where his father was the President of Gulf Oil. His first careers included the management of supplies for the Navy (in Hawaii) during World War II, ownership of a Wenatchee Shell Station, automotive manager for Sears, electrical and plumbing manager at Wells and Wade, County microbiologist and medical technologist, adjunct facility member of Wenatchee Community College, and, finally, Chelan-Douglas Health District Director. John and his wife, Carol Carlberg Garmany, moved to Wenatchee, WA, with their young daughter, Dr. Hallie Garmany Ward, in 1950. As noted, he embraced many career paths in Wenatchee as well as serving as PTA President of both Washington Elementary School and Orchard Junior High School. During his professional rise in Wenatchee, John was instrumental in bringing such “pop” culture groups as the “Brothers Four”, “Shindig” and “Sky King” directly to the Wenatchee culture. Accordingly, John was honored as “Man of the Year” for his many contributions to Wenatchee. In 1969, John’s first spouse, Carol, passed from cancer. Following that profound loss, John returned to college at the University of Washington, where he worked in cancer research while earning a microbiology degree at that same university. In 1972, he married Quinn Firman, a Wenatchee elementary school teacher. Within that loving and meaningful relationship of 44 years. John served as Science Adjunct Professor at Wenatchee Valley College, a Chelan-Douglas Health District lab technician, and the director of that same health District office for some 12 years. The Chelan-Douglas Health District grew by 30% in the 12 years he directed the health department. As a person and a scientist, John Garmany was truly “one-of-a-kind”! He thrived on fishing, geology, and especially upon “giving to all”. Survived by: Dr. Hallie Ward (daughter); Mrs. Sue Goodwin, Ms. Cass Firman, and Mr. Rebb Firman (step-children); seven beautiful, bright and successful grandchildren; and eight delightful great-grandchildren. There will be a relatively brief, informal Memorial at the Wenatchee Cemetery for John at 3:30 p.m. on Friday, August 4, 2017. Obituary published in The Wenatchee World.
