Description	:	John was the son of John Heinrich Bornhoft & Anne Strollendorf (born Sept 1817 Germany). He married Bertha Jonsson Bengsten in 1874. They immigrated to America in 1884. They were the parents of ten children: Edward (died in infancy) and John, Jr. (1875-1936), August (1879 IA), Anna (1881), Claus Henry (1884, Ella), Gustave (1885), Clara (1887, George F Jans), Walter (1890), Edna (1892, Hans Voss), & Ella (1895, Claud Gill). Dec 23, 1937 - Carroll Daily Herald - Funeral arrangements for John Bornhoft have not been completed but according to relatives will probably be held Sunday afternoon at the Evangelical church. As yet the arrangements are being held up pending the arrival of the body from California on Friday forenoon. Denison Bulletin - Thursday , December 30th, 1937 - This community has again been called on to mourn the passing of one of its early settlers, John Bornhoft. His death occurred at Long Beach, Calif., Tuesday morning, from a heart attack. Mr. Bornhoft left here accompanied by his daughter, Mrs. George Jans and husband, only a week previous, where they expected to spend the winter. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock in the Evangelical church. Rev. E.G. Otte officiating. A quartet, composed of Mrs. Ray Martens, Feme Kruse, Lafe Schoenjahn and Harold Kracht, sang two hymns, "In The Garden," and "The Old Rugged Cross," accompanied by Irene Rohwer. Lydia Thiedeman sang a solo, "But the Lord is Mindful of His Own." Those who attended the coffin were grandsons: Donald Bornhoft, Raymond Bornhoft, Arlo Bornhoft, Walter Schoessler, Arthur Schoesslor and Irwin Thiedeman. Burial was made in the family lot in the West Side cemetery. Relatives and friends from a distance attending the last rites were: Mr. and Mrs. Hans Voss and son, John, of Austin, Minn., Mr. and Mrs. George Fitzloff and son, Howard, of Mankato, Min., Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Bornhoft of Glidden, Mr. and Mrs. Herman Kuhrts of Quimby, Mr. and Mrs. John Behrens and sons, Ted and Gordon, of Sioux City, Mr. and Mrs. Otto Dowling of Lohrville, Mr. and Mrs. Magnus Tadsen of Wall Lake, Mr. and Mrs. Theodore Schoenjahn of Mapleton, Mr. and Mrs. Ed McCutcheon of Denison, Mr. and Mrs. Emil Carstens of Buck Grove … John Henry Bornhoft was born on July 11, 1855 in Asheburg, Schleswig- Holstein, Germany, where he grew to manhood. At the age of 18 years he was drafted into the German army where he served for three years. In the year 1878 he was united in martriage to Bertha Bengkien. To this union ten children were born, two of whom with his wife preceded him in death, Edward in infancy and John, Jr. in 1936. In 1884 Mr. Bornhoft and his family emigrated to America and settled in West Side, where he was engaged in farm work until he was 38 years old. In 1893 he purchased a farm 1 1/2 miles west of West Side, known as the old family home where the family lived until Mr. Bornhoft retired in 1914 and which was then occupied by his son, John. Jr. and family. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. He was a member of the Germania Verein for nearly half a century. In the year 1902 he was married to Mrs. Sarah Byerly, who died in October of the same year. The following year he was married to Mrs. Alvina Burmeister, who passed away Oct. 10, 1934. He leaves to mourn his death eight children: August, Anna, now Mrs. Henry Schoessler, Henry, Gustav, Clara, now Mrs. George Jans, Waller, Edna, now Mrs. Hans Voss, Austin, Minn., and Ella, now Mrs. Claud Gill; twenty-five grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren.
