He was baptized and confirmed in the Catholic church in Earling. He attended Earling school and grew to adulthood in the Earling and Westphalia vicinities. Ebert, 83 WESTPHALIA — John Henry Ebert, son of Arnold and Mary Leenan Ebert was born Jan. 1, 1904 on a farm in Shelby county. He was baptized and confirmed in the Catholic church in Earling. He attended Earling school and grew to adulthood in the Earling and Westphalia vicinities. On Jan. 10,1928, he married Valeria Schmitz at St. Boniface Catholic church in Westphalia. Six children were born to this union. After their marriage, they made their home in Westphalia where he worked as a painter. In 1952, they moved to Harlan where he continued to paint as a self-employed contractor. He retired in 1976 but continued to make his home in Harlan. He has been a member of St. Michael's Catholic church since moving to Harlan. They were privileged to celebrate their 58th wedding anniversary in Jan. of 1986. He became a resident of the Baptist Memorial Home in Nov. of 1986 where he died June 12,1987 at age 83 years, 5 months and 11 days. In addition to his wife, Valeria, who died on March 12,1986, he was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Jack; one daughter, Thelma; one granddaughter, Janelle and two sisters, Lena Schimerowski and Anna Schiltz. Survivors include one daughter, JoAnn (Mrs. Russell) Campbell of Harlan; three sons, James of Harlan; Donald of Co. Bluffs and Robert of Omaha, NE; 11 grandchildren; two step grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; one sister, Caroline Finken of Omaha, NE and one brother, Art of El Paso, TX; nieces and nephews and other relatives. A Mass of Christian Burial was Celebrated at St. Michael's Catholic church on June 15, 1987 with Rev. David Polich as the Celebrant. Burial was in St. Boniface cemetery, Westphalia with Scott Campbell, Jerry Campbell, John Ebert, Jeff Ebert, Paul Pitts and Brian Arkfeld all serving as casketbearers. Pauley Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
