Old John Henry Evans was born May 1, 1873 at Princeville, Illinois to John and Margaret Ann Evans, and passed away at the Swallum Hospital, Friday, December 30, 1949 at 8 p. m. o'clock following a short illness at the age of 76 years, 7 months and 29 days. He was the youngest of eight children all having preceded him in death. He came to Iowa with his parents at the age of six and settled on a farm north of Newell. He spent his entire life in the Newell Community except for ten years when he lived in Aurelia, Iowa. He attended the rural school in Coon Township and church and Sunday school at Coon Center. On February 26, 1903 he was united in marriage to Bertha Ann Williams who with one son Roy Robert preceded him in death. In 1936 he was united in marriage to Minnie Walker. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Newell and a member of the Odd Fellows lodge for over 59 years. Those who mourn his passing are his wife and four children, Nora (Mrs. Martin Johnsen), Louella (Mrs. Farley Bellows), Alice (Mrs. Paul Willfong), and Glen Evans all of Newell and four grandchildren, Norma Johnson, Carl Bellows, Patty Willfong and Johnny Evans and several nieces and nephews. They never quite leave us, the loved ones who have passed. Through the shadow of death to the sunlight above. A thousand sweet memories are holding them fast. Funeral services were held at the Larsen Funeral Home Monday, January 2, 1950 at two o'clock, conducted by Rev. A. I. Osborne and Rev. N. F. Grote. The pallbearers were John Bellows, Floyd Bellows, Clarence Timke, Walter Winthrop, Earl Williams and Marcus Christiansen. Music was furnished by Mrs. Marcus Christiansen and Mrs. Fred Bircher Sr. Flower committee was Mrs. Clifford Olsen, Mrs. Ernest McCormick and Mrs. Fern Larsen. Relatives and friends attending from out-of-town were Mr. and Mrs. Don C. Kinney. Fon-du-Lae, Wisconsin, Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Walker, St. Paul, Minn, Mr. and Mrs. Lee Lindsay and Mr. and Mrs. W. M. Wayman of Cherokee, Mr. and Mrs. Louis Lauritsen, Sioux Rapids, Elmer Doxsee, Webb, Mr. and Mrs. Steve Hall, Wall Lake, Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Malcom and family, Mr. and Mrs. Ray Point and Mrs. Marcia Willfong and Mr. and Mrs. Harold Harjes of Storm Lake, Mr. and Mrs. San Green, Fonda, Mr. and Mrs. Bill Kleist, Estherville, Mr. Fred Johnsen, Nemaha, Mr. and Mrs. Gene Foval and Mrs. Lee Schuler of Albert City.
