Morning Sun Herald – Thursday, Sept 24. 1896, published in Morning Sun, Iowa Marshal Finley Shot A Mr. McPherson of Keithsburg is the Guilty Man – He Makes His Escape One of the most unprovoked crimes in the history of our little city took place Sabbath evening. The story is briefly told. A Mrs. McPherson has employed to work in hotel St. Elmo for some weeks past. She has with her a daughter, aged probably 7 or 8 years. Sunday evening her divorced husband in company with his son attempted to take the daughter from her mother by force. In so doing they created such a disturbance that it was necessary to call the Marshal, who put the men under arrest. He called Fred Congrove to his assistance and gave the young man into his charge. Marshal Finley asked Mr. McPherson if he had any fire-arms which question was answered in the negative. Without searching the man but taking his word he then started with them for the lock-up. On the way McPherson turned and cooly shot Marshal Finley and made his escape. The ball struck Finley in the right breast, ranging downward, and has not be been located. Immediately the whole town was aroused and turned out to hunt the villain. They searched the fields all over until a late hour but no trace of him could be found. The sheriff was immediately notified and set out on the trail. He has been heard of and seen several times since the affair and the probabilities are that he will be captured soon as there is a $100 reward offered for his capture. The sheriff of Washington county is also on the trail, and if he is not captured pretty soon we’ll miss our guess. At this writing Marshal Finley is resting as easy as possible under the circumstances, and if he does not take a turn for the worse soon, he will probably get well. THE BULLET IS FATAL City Marshal, J. H. Finley Died Early Monday Morning From the Effects of the Bullet Fired by McPherson J. H. Finley, who was shot in the right breast on Sabbath evening, Sept 20th, by a man named McPherson, died early Monday morning from the effects of the wound. A coroner’s inquest was held Tuesday forenoon with Robt. Owens, F.M. Brown and Thos. Wilson as jurors and with Drs. Allen, Smyth, D. Y. Graham and Grimes as medical advisors. The jury returned a verdict that Mr. Finley’s death was caused by being shot in the right breast. The deceased was born Dec 9th, 1839 in Tennessee, and died at the residence of S. D. Johnson, Oct 5th, 1896, aged 56 years, 8 months and 26 days. Twenty-nine years ago he made a profession of his faith in Christ and joined the Christian church, and has endeavored to live an honest and upright life since. He came with his parents to Iowa in 1811 and settled in Lee county. While there he was united in marriage to Nancy Clark on Jan. 1, 1865. They then moved to Marion county, where his wife died in 1876. He then married Lucinda Randle, on Jan. 21, 1877. In 1882 he moved to this county where he resided until death, his wife having preceded him a few years ago. He leaves seven children and a large number of relatives and friends to mourn his demise. The funeral services were held in the Christian Church Tuesday at 2 p.m., under the direction of Blake Post 114 G.A.R., the sermon being preached by Rev. D. T. Campbell, assisted by Revs. Trumbull and Alexander. The Internment took place in the Morning Sun Cemetery. He enlisted in the army in the 14th Iowa regiment, Company D., in October 1861, and after serving his country faithfully for four years, was honorably discharged in November 1864. He was one of those patriotic men who enlisted under the call of Abraham Lincoln for 300,000 volunteers. He helped capture Ft. Donelson and was in the great battles of Shiloh and Vicksburg. In the G.A.R. post here he was held in high esteem and was and officer of the guard. The tree youngest children will go to Burlington for the present and make their homes with their brothers and sister who reside there.
