John Henry Henke was born July 6, 1918, at his father's farm three and a half miles south of Hannover, the son of William F. and Lena (Kemmesat) Henke. He attended school one-half mile from the farm for grades one through three, then went to the Hannover rural school for grades four through nine. Because he was needed on the farm, he was unable to continue his education, but received his honorary diploma after completing his coursework through NDSU when he was 80 years old. Johnny was an avid baseball player, having missed Yankee baseball recruitment by one year due to World War II. Johnny pitched and played third base. During a game in Mandan, a major league recruiter contacted him to play for the Yankees, but it was too late. Johnny had already been drafted into military service. He joined the Air Force, where he loaded guns and bombs on the planes and served as staff sergeant for four and a half years. When he returned from the service in 1945, he married the love of his life, Selma Kitzmann, and settled on 760 acres south of Hannover. He was an active member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Hannover, serving as the Lutheran Hour representative for 13 years. Johnny served as a Sunday school teacher and secretary for 30 years. He was also a member of the Lutheran Laymen's League, serving as treasurer for 23 years. An active member of the American Legion, he served as company commander for the Oliver County section for many years. He enjoyed polka fest on the radio on Sunday morning, playing pinochle with his family and talking about his involvement in farming, the war and baseball. Johnny cherished the time spent with his grandchildren and thanked God for the many wonderful years he had on this Earth. He died with no regrets. Johnny is survived by his wife of 64 years, Selma; his children, Gene, Hawaii, Iris Bridgewater, Belfield, Lina (Duane) Splichal, Dickinson, Lee (Claire Schafer), Hannover, and Jerry (Paulette Schmidt), Mandan; 10 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and three siblings, Erna Seifert, Minnesota, Margaret Bargmann, Center, and Dick Henke, New Salem. He is preceded in death by his parents; five siblings, Helmuth Henke, Martha Baier, Christ Henke, Albert Henke and William Henke; and two children, Roger and a still-born baby girl.
