Manson, Sr., and one of Elk Creek's most prominent and prosperous citizens died yesterday of pneumonia followed by influenza. The funeral was held today at 2 o'clock this afternoon, Rev. J. Overholtzer of Codora officiating. D. C. Tucker prepared the remains for burial yesterday but because of the bad conditions of the roads decided not to drive the hearse to Elk Creek. Interment was therefore taken charge of by friends and relatives. Mr. Manson was born in this state in 1879, being now 39 years of age and was taken to Elk Creek by his father when three years old. He has been identified practically all his life with the lumber and mill businesses in which his father was interested and has for many years run the saw mill near Elk Creek. He was counted among the most prosperous and progressive citizens of the western section of the county and was respected by all who knew him for his honesty and high moral character. He is survived by his wife and one daughter, Alvira and by two brothers, Howard at Red Bluff and Eugene at Elk Creek. Mr. Manson's is the first death from influenza to be reported of the hill section has been remarkably free of the epidemic until recently when several cases have appeared. – Transcribed by M. Glenn Transcript, Saturday, 14 December 1918, Page 1: Prominent Lumberman Influenza Victim John Henry Manson died at his home in Elk Creek Wednesday John Henry Manson, one of the prominent men of the Elk Creek country, died last Wednesday morning from complications resulting from an attack of influenza. The remains were given burial Thursday and the funeral was quite largely attended by relatives and friends. John Henry Manson was a native son of California and was born at Elk Creek 3/27/1879, making him 39 years of age. Like his father before him, the deceased followed the lumbering business all his life and with his father and brothers conducted mills in different localities in the Coast Range mountains. He was an honest, upright man and was highly respected by all his acquaintances. He leaves a wife and family to mourn his early taking away, as well as his mother and several brothers. – Transcribed by M.
