His wife provided the birth information of Cayuga, Indiana and birth date for tombstone and records, but even her information is faulty. John is the only surviving member of his family which left no one to contact and confirm his birth dates at time of death. According to his Social Security Application, John is the son of: Alfred James Marshall & Mary Elizabeth Gilkeson. According to his marriage licence he married Mabel Lucinda Powers 24 Feb 1917 in Malvern, Hot Springs, Arkansas. Obituary follows: "John Henry Marshall, father of 8, found dead of head injuries and possibly a broken neck suffered when he fell or was pulled into a small conveyor belt in the chipper plant of the Reed Mill leased to Rayonier Inc., killed John Henry Marshall 58, clean up worker for the chipper crew, shortly before noon Wednesday. Fellow workers found Marshall's body jammed between the conveyor belt and an idler roller not more than five minutes after the accident occurred, with the left side of his head badly mangled that it is believed the handle of Marshall's cleanup sweep may have become caught in the moving belt and that in attempting to extract it Marshall was pulled into the moving machinery. The conveyor belt was a small one used only for carrying away the refuse of the chipper operations and the belt was of a flexible material. Marshall was employed to clean up the refuse left by the chipper operations of the previous night before the chipper was put into operation at 4:30 each afternoon for its daily shift. Fellow workman said he was accustomed to working with the belt moving, tossing the refuse onto the belt as he worked around it. No one saw the accident but other employes in the Reed Mill had seen Marshall less than five minutes before his body was discovered. He was rushed to Shelton hospital in an ambulance but was pronounced dead upon arriving there. Funeral services are to be conducted Saturday at one o'clock from the Masonic temple in Shelton under the auspices of Mt. Moriah Lodge NO. 11, with grave-side rites by the Odd Fellows Lodge. The Marshall family has lived in Shelton for 13 years and Mr. Marshall had been employed by the Rayonier plant for 12 years. Survivors include the widow, Mabel; three sons, Chester, Brady and Vernon, all of Shelton; and five daughters, Mrs. Lorine Whitener of Kamilche, Mrs. Irene White of McCleary, and Clara and Christine and Mary of Shelton." - Shelton Newspaper
