Marston _____ Much of the information in this bio comes from word of mouth of my mother, Marguerite (Marston) Pumphrey who knew and lived with John Henry Marston in Creston, California during the last few years of his life. At this time John was nearly 80 years of age and due to declining health he and his wife, Nancy (Golliher) Marston came from Monterey County to live in neighboring San Luis Obispo County in the home of his son, James N Marston, who was my mother's father. My mother was only 4 years old when her grandmother Nancy died and mother told me that she doesn't remember her grandmother. However, she does remember her grandfather, John Marston, and she especially remembers his funeral. She commented to me about all the pretty flowers at his funeral and she stated that her grandfather was buried next to her grandmother in the small 2 person plot bordered by a wrought iron fence in the Creston Cemetery. I visited the burial site in the 1970s accompanied by my mother and she said the plot looked exactly like she remembered it when she was a 7 year old girl at her grandfather John's funeral. She also told me that she doesn't know why there was no headstone placed but that was exactly where she saw him buried. From Bible records John Henry Marston was born on 12 Mar 1829 in Monmouthshire which at that time was situated in England although it currently is within Wales. He emigrated in 1850 with his parents from Newport, Monmouthshire to the United States aboard the ship "Sachem" which docked in New Orleans. From here the Marston family sailed up the Mississippi River to St. Louis, Missouri. John settled across the river in Illinois and first married Lucinda Denney on 26 Oct 1851 in Adams Co., Illinois. There is no further record for her so I assume that she died childless as John next married Nancy Golliher on 5 Dec 1857 in Hancock Co., Illinois. Her maiden name is spelled Gollaher on some records but the family seemed to prefer the spelling as Golliher. The 2 oldest children of John and Nancy were born in Adams Co., Illinois and in 1867 John, Nancy and their 2 children moved from Illinois to California. According to my mother this move involved sailing down the Mississippi and taking a boat to Panama where they crossed the isthmus by overland and then sailed up the Pacific Ocean on another boat to Monterey, California. They first settled in Yolo County for a year where John was naturalized on 5 Oct 1868 but they soon moved to Monterey County by 1870. Accompanying them on this move were John's parents, his brother James and his sister, Lydia Ann. John's father died in Monterey County in 1869 and his now widowed mother is listed in the 1870 census along with his brother, James. Next door is their sister, Lydia Ann and her husband David Shultes. John's mother died in 1874 at which time James Marston returned to Yolo County. Monterey County would remain the home of John and Nancy Marston for the next 35 years until their move to Creston a few years before their deaths.
