He died Sunday, February 4, 1996 at the Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison at the age of eighty-one. John grew up on the family farm in Otter Creek Township near Schleswig. He began his early education in a rural school near his home and continued his education in the Schleswig Community High School graduating there with the class of 1932. He was baptized in Christ on March 31, 1928 at the Friedens Evangelical Reformed Church and confirmed there on March 29, 1931. On June 3, 1945, John was united in marriage to Bernice Else at Trinity Lutheran Church in Grant Township, Ida Grove, Iowa. The couple settled on the family farm near Schleswig and remained there until retiring in 1976 when the couple moved to Schleswig. On April 14, 1946 John became a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church, until the church closed in 1969, at which time the couple became members of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig. In June of 1995, the couple celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary. In his early days of school, John was active in various 4-H programs and participated in the International Cattle Show, held in Chicago, for which he received an award. More recent years found him enjoying his leisure time watching sports and various other programs on TV. Additionally, he challenged his mind with word games that were published in the newspaper. John was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, George and Hugo and one sister, Louise Hinrichsen. Survivors include his wife, Bernice of Schleswig; one sister, Jessie Jaacks of Denison; two sisters-in-law, Maxine Gronau of Denison; and Eileen Ostermann and her husband, Bob of Holstein. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, February 7, 1996 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig, Iowa. Rev. Patrick Sparling officiated the service and grave side rites held at the Morgan Cemetery in Schleswig. Marlene Hight provided the organ accompaniment for congregational hymns "Just as I Am, Without One Plea," "The Lord's My Shepherd, I'll Not Want" and "I Know That My Redeemer Lives." Those serving as pallbearers were: Russell Ostermann, Palmer Moeller, Douglas Gronau, Dale Gronau, Andrew Flagge and Jon Jaacks. The family invited everyone in at attendance at the service to join them in fellowship and lunch at the church, served by the Ladies Aid.
