Sheriff Cecil Reynolds, Deputy Domer E. Ballard, Chief of Police Vear Howell, State Trooper James (Whitey) DeArmond and Patrolman Bob Marks are investigating the death. While the apparent suicide occurred prior to 10 a.m., Sheriff Reynolds at noon reported he had been unable to get the body released to the undertaker because the Coroner, Todd B. Bender, North Manchester, was absent from the county and there was no deputy to act in his place. The sheriff next contacted the county health officer, Dr. E.K. Black, who can serve under such circumstances, but learned he was unable to go on the case because of illness and would have to deputize some other physician. Finally Dr. Arthur P. Rhamy was engaged to check the case. Mr. Reyolds added that the family had designated the Hoover-Miner Funeral home to make preparations for the funeral. According to the check-up, Joe Pegg, a son, went to Lagro at 8:30 o'clock Tuesday morning, and when he returned about an hour an a half later, he found his father lying dead on the kitchen floor. He had been shot through the left side of the chest with a .12 guage shotgun. He is believed to have died instantly. Mrs. Pegg was in Wabash at the time, and Mr. Pegg was alone at home. Joe called his brother, Claude Pegg, 811 North East street, employee of a local store, and he notified authorities. Mr. Pegg recently suffered a heart attack and was a patient at the hospital, but he had not been doing so well and is thought to have been despondent over his condition. He left no note. Examination showed powder burns around the wound, indicating the gun had been held close to his body. Mr. Pegg was born Aug. 26, 1879 in Wabash county, the son of Ephriam and Sarah Jane (Redman) Pegg, and had been a life-long resident of the community. In his younger years, Mr. Pegg engaged in farming, later was a cement contractor and in recent years had returned to farming. His marriage occurred in October 1901. He belonged to the Pilgrim Holiness church here. Survivors include the widow and the following sons and daughters: Joseph, at home; Mrs. Ellen Futrell, Wabash R.R. 5; Claude, this city; Gilbert, Andrews; Merill, Inkster, Mich.; and Louis, Wabash. One daughter, Marie, preceded him in death in 1925.
