He was the third child of eight children. Johann Heinrich married Mary Gertrude Boeggerman (b. 1809) in Germany. On Nov. 19, 1838, he arrived at the Port of New Orleans aboard the "Bremen Brig Louise." The passenger ship claimed he was a farmer from Hannover, age 31, and his destination was Misoury (Missouri). He brought with him "one case" of belongings. Mary Gertrude and their infant son did not come with him at this time. We know that they arrived sometime prior to 1842 because their 2nd son was born in Missouri. Johann Heinrich first came to St. Louis. He told a grandson he had been offered lots where St. Louis City Hall now stands for $70.00 per lot. He believed a better future waited along the Missouri River so left St. Louis seeking the promise of a better life. Within four years of his 1838 arrival, Johann, his wife and family were settled into farm life near Washington, MO. Written records show Johann Heinrich soon dropped the German spelling of his name and adopted the American version, John Henry. They lived near Washington, MO for at least 35 years. During this time four more children were born for a total of six, John Henry, Francis Henry, George Henry (?), Joseph Henry, John Henry and Mary Gertrude (twins). (Notice all the Henrys. Giving the same Christian name was a German tradition.) Sometime after the Civil War, Francis left the Washington homestead for Colorado Territory. Within the decade, George, Joseph, Mary and John moved upriver to Saline County in central Missouri. They and their families established themselves in the farming community known as West Glasgow. It is believed the German born parents arrived in Saline Co. about 1883, probably with their first born son, John, the last one to leave their land near Washington.
