NE (linked below) In 1877, John Henry and Nancy Jane together with their children Jacob and Mary Alice migrated to Cloud co. KS. They built a tiny home on the open prairie near the village of Concordia. In the spring of 1878, they were joined by Nancy's brother Joseph Ellis Newsom, his wife Sarah Jane Sargent and their four children Olive (age 6) Jacob (4), Joseph (2) and James (about 2-3 months). The four adults and six children shared the tiny home. Later in life they joked about one or two of them having to climb out a window to get away from the dinner table! In June 1878, the family heads decided to leave Kansas and move 180 miles north to Dodge county Nebraska where they knew other Hoosier families had settled. So they set forth, the Thompson family in one horse-drawn wagon and the Newsom family in another horse-drawn wagon! After an unknown number of days enroute (10 perhaps?) they reached the Platte river, but still faced the problem of fording it. This turned out to be a frightening experience, but ultimately they safely reached the north side of the river at which point they were only a few miles from their destination. They settled on land just a few miles northwest of the village of North Bend. The Thompson family increased by two after their arrival in Nebraska (Wilber and Burtie). Burtie only lived a few months. John Henry's life was cut short by pneumonia in January 1888. He died at age 44 just a few days after the notorious blizzard of 1888 and less than ten years after his arrival in Nebraska. He left behind his widow Nancy Jane and their three surviving children (age 6 to 13). John Henry Thompson was a courageous and intrepid pioneer! His name is engraved on the GAR civil war monument which is the center piece of Woodland cemetery!
