Description	:	JOHN HIXSON. – Thirty years ago the subject of this sketch came to Iowa from Ohio, to which State he migrated from Loudon County, Virginia, his native place. The second son of David and Catharine Hixson, born 1807. At the age of twenty-two he was married to Polly M. Burnett, by whom he has had fourteen children, eight of whom are now living. The second son of David and Catharine Hixson, born 1807. At the age of twenty-two he was married to Polly M. Burnett, by whom he has had fourteen children, eight of whom are now living. His mother is still living and enjoying good health at the ripe old age of ninety-one; she has living at the present time about one hundred and fifty grand children. L. B. Hixson, his oldest son, is living on a comfortable farm of ninety acres, near his father. During the rebellion, Mr. Hixson proved himself to be one of the warmest patriots in the Northwest; three sons joined the army. They all served their country faithfully, and at the present day Daniel carries a wound which tells of the sufferings at Vicksburg. When Mr. Hixson was married, his worldly possessions consisted of five dollars cash, and a horse, saddle and bridle, worth about a hundred dollars; his wife had about forty-five dollars. In 1839 his property was valued at five thousand dollars, but adverse circumstances deprived him of it all. In 1843 he came to Burlington, and after paying his expenses, he had just fifty cents left. To-day he is worth about nine thousand dollars. In Mr. Hixson’s history we see his determination to succceed, although obliged to work against adverse circumstances, over which he had no control.
