John passed away Friday, April 19, 2013, at Bethesda Home in Webster at the age of 97 years, 9 months and 11 days. John Hubert Waletich was born July 8, 1915, on the family farm near Eden, SD to John and Katherine (Weyer) Waletich. As a youngster, he grew up on the farm and attended schools in Marshall County. He was baptized and confirmed at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Eden. On November 6, 1940, John married Lela Samson at Eden. To this union, three children were born. They bought a farm in Sisseton Township where, in the early years, John raised cattle and hogs. Later in his farming career, John was primarily involved in haying and raising Black Angus cattle. Lela passed away on April 10, 1966. John continued to make his home on the farm until moving to Bethesda Home in Webster in August of 2008. John was a lifelong member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Eden. He was truly a farmer at heart, and carried out his life’s work until leaving the farm at the age of 93. He enjoyed playing cards, hunting and especially spending time with his family. In his later years, John loved teaching his favorite card game, “Up and Down the River” to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He also spent many pleasant hours listening to the Minnesota Twins baseball games. Grateful for having shared his life are his three children: David (Patty) Waletich, Judy (Ron) Nygaard, Bruce (Sue) Waletich; 15 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; a brother, Peter (Lorraine) Waletich; a sister, Margaret Thuringer; and many nieces, nephews and their families. Preceding him in death were his parents, his wife, four brothers: George, Joe, Leo and Rubert Waletich; and two sisters: Tillie Krista and Rosella Waletich.
