Mr. Birch, 64, died at his home, Dayton St. at Walnut, about 5:00 a.m. Monday. He had arrived home from Bonita Springs, Florida, where he and Mrs. Birch had been since November, on the previous Wednesday. He had suffered a severe heart attack there about three weeks ago and never fully recovered from it. He had suffered from a chronic heart condition for the past ten years. Mr. Birch was born in Grape Grove, Ohio, but came to Yellow Springs in 1885 and had lived here most of the time since. For many years he was a salesman and represented Cincinnati OH Works Co., the Frontier Mfg. Co. and National Refining Co. He founded the Birch Oil Co. here in 1933 and operated it until last summer when he sold the business and its properties to Chet Loe and Donald William Brannum. At the time of his death Mr. Birch was president of the Glen Forest Cemetery Association, on whose board he had served for many years. He was also a member of the Civic Club and the local Masonic lodge. He belonged to the Shrine and the Scottish Rite, Masonic bodies, in Dayton, and was an enthusiastic Mason. Surviving relatives include the widow, Mrs. Dean Miller Birch; one son, Pvt. John M. Birch, who is stationed at Ft. Knox, Ky.; two sisters, Mrs. J.N. Wolford, Walnut St., and Mrs. A.J. Willey of Marion, Ohio; four nephews and four nieces. Mr. Birch was a nephew of the late Hugh Taylor Birch. His grand-father was a trustee of Antioch College during Horace Mann's presidency.
