He grew up in Pierre graduating from Pierre High School. After high school, he began his collegiate career at South Dakota State College in Brookings. He was then drafted into the Army and was honorably discharged in 1964. John returned to SDSC, graduating with a Bachelors Degree. Following college John moved to California where he met his wife Rita Vetter. They were united in marriage in Las Vegas in 1968. California is the place where John started his career of over 40 years in insurance and Real Estate. After the birth of their sons they returned to Pierre in 1972. John was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Masonic Lodge, Shriners, Elks, VFW, Izaak Walton (past president and state director), Pierre Chamber of Commerce (past president), Rotary (past director), Pierre Fire Department, St. Mary's Hospital Board of Directors, past owner of KELCO Corp and the Locke Hotel, past owner of the Landmark Agency, Executive Director for Independent Insurance Agents of SD. He enjoyed spending time with his 6 grand kids, anything with the outdoors including hunting and camping, sports, and tinkering with gadgets and duct tape. He is survived by his wife Rita of Pierre; two sons: Jim (JoAnn) of Brandon and JJ (Jill) of Pierre; six grandchildren: Shelby, Ashley and Sawyer all of Brandon and Brianna, Josee and Gabbi all of Pierre and sister Joann Ellis of Pierre. He was preceded in death by his parents Bernard and Marie Linn; brother James Linn; sisters: Jeanne Kelley and Jerilyn Lappat and brother in laws Horace Ellis and Ken Kelley.
