Funeral services were held Saturday, September 17, 1977 at 1:30 p.m. at the Colfax Center Presbyterian Church with Rev. Jerry Van Curler officiating. Burial was in the Colfax Center cemetery, rural Holland. Mrs. Tom Simms sang "Sitting At the Feet of Jesus" and "What a Friend We Have In Jesus". She was accompanied by Mrs. Lillian Dieken who also played selected numbers for the prelude and postlude. Casket bearers were Mark Kruse, Scott Paterni, Stanley Paterni, Larry Paterni, Lawrence Paterni, Royce Paterni and Willie Paterni. Ushers were Milf Meyer, Harry Ascher and Herman Akkerman. Mrs. Jerry Peters and Mrs. Dale Heerts were in charge of the floral arrangements. Following committal services friends and relatives were invited back to the church for a period of fellowship and refreshments. Mr. Paterni was born on April 1, 1903, near Wellsburg, Iowa and attained the age of 74 years, 5 months and 13 days. He was the son of John and Malena Walters Paterni. In 1929 he was married to Tena Stahl. They farmed west of Holland. She passed away in June of 1948. He continued farming west of Holland. On June 7, 1949, at the Colfax Center Presbyterian church, he was united in marriage to Ella Heronimus Kruse. They farmed until 1956 when he semi-retired and they moved to Grundy Center. He completely retired in 1973. They lived at 605 10th Street. He was a member of the Colfax Center Presbyterian Church where he served as an elder and Sunday School superintendent and also various church committees. The last several years he was head funeral usher. He is survived by his wife, Ella; three sons, Clarence of rural Eldora, James of Sioux City, and Norman of rural Holland; five brothers, Remmer of Des Moines, Lenus and Jake of Wellsburg, Herman of Grundy Center and Sam of Eldora; two sisters, Mrs. George (Henrietta) Hoodjer of Wellsburg and Mrs. Richard (Jennie) Reiken of Ackley; five grandchildren and one great-grandson. Those who preceded him in death were his parents, his first wife, one grandson, four brothers and one sister. A memorial fund has been established.
