Schachtner passed away at his home, 609 North Clark street, Wednesday morning, November 3 at 11:45 o'clock after being In poor health for the last two years, suffering with high blood pressure and hardening of the arteries. Friday afternoon he suffered a slight stroke of paralysis from the effects of which he did not recover, and died Wednesday, fully fortified with the last rites of the Catholic church. While he bad not been well for the last two years he never lost his ambition and would not give up to his feelings. He never complained and when friends would inquire as to his health the answer was always a pleasant, "I am feeling alright." Up until Friday he never missed going down town every day and chatting with old friends. He was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Schachtner and was born at Beaver Dam, Wis., January 27, 1862, moving with his parents to Dunlap when a small child and has since been a resident of Iowa. As a growing boy he spent much of his time at Mt. Carmel with his brother Joe Schachtner, and became one of the school teachers of the county. He taught awhile and attended the Shenandoah normal school, later graduating from that school in June 1887. The following year on June 26, 1888 he was married to Miss Jennie Egan, who with their only child, Earl survive. After following his vocation as a teacher in the county schools for several years he went into the grocery business in this city, selling out in 1915 to Leo Ament. After going out of business he took up the insurance business, handling various lines. He was engaged in this business at the time of his death. Mr. Schachtner was a very pleasant and agreeable man with a kindly word for every one. He was a member of the St. Joseph church and the Holy Name society. He was also a member of the Ben Hur chapter which he helped to organize In Carroll, and for years held the highest office. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and of the Modern Woodmen. Besides his wife and son he leaves two brothers, Joe Schachtner of this city and Mike Schachtner of South Dakota. He also leaves four sisters: Misses Mary and Teresa Schachtner of Manning; Mrs. John Olerich of Carroll Mrs. Adam Zurn of Crawford, Nebr., and Mrs. Johannah Nolen of South Dakota. Funeral services will be held from St. Joseph's church Saturday morning at 9 o'clock.
