Obit from The Revelle Echo, July 26, 1894 Wednesday afternoon of last week, John Shingler met with a frightful accident while operating a planer in the wood department in N.M. Fuhrman's Carriage Works, Columbiana. while engaged at his work the belt which run the machinery broke, one end striking him on the right side of the head, fracturing his skull. He was conveyed to his home by fellow workmen in an unconscious condition, where Drs. Whitehead, Tullis and Albright performed the operation of raising the bones that were resting upon the brain. He remained in an unconscious condition all night and died Thursday morning at 1 o'clock. Mr. Shingler was a prosperous citizen, respected by all. He was about 49 years old and leaves a wife and eight children to mourn his loss. Our community was covered by a gloom of sadness on Wednesday evening of last week, on learning that our townsman, John Shingler, was in a dying condition from an injury received by the breaking of a belt in the carriage factory of N.M. Fuhrman and which ultimately caused his death at 1o'clock, Thursday morning. His funeral took place on Saturday morning at 10 o'clock and was presided over by Rev. Birch. Served in Co C 67th Pa. I, vet 61-65, during the Civil War. John Shingler married Melinda Schamaker in 1870. They had 7 children George Adam Shingler (May 2, 1874-Oct. 18, 1904) Edward Irvin Shingler (Feb. 4, 1876-?) Julius Shingler (Feb, 14, 1878-Jan. 20, 1912) Katie Shingler (Jan. 13, 1880-May 7, 1895) Mary Shingler (Apr. 12, 1882-July 22, 1900) Elsie Shingler (Jan. 22, 1884-Oct. 22, 1901) Elizabeth Shingler (March 3, 1886-May 29, 1976) married Homer W. Hammond on Dec. 24, 1913.
