Smid, respected resident of Bruno community for 51 years, died at his home Wednesday morning March 4, at the age of 68 years, 9 months and 15 days. He had been in failing health the past three years. Funeral services were held at the Bruno hall at 2 o'clock Friday afternoon, with Rev. Benjamin Marek of Wahoo preaching the funeral sermon and conducting the funeral rites. The pallbearers were L. A. Coufal, Joseph L. Coufal, Charles Noval, Otto Proskovec, Theodore Pecha and James Rech. Burial was in the Bohemian National cemetery near Bruno. John J. Smid, only son of the late Edward and Marie Smid, was born at Prispa, Moravia, May 19, 1873. The family came to the United States in 1879, living in the east until 1891, then moving to Nebraska and Butler county on a farm 1½ miles west of Bruno. Mr. Smid and Miss Katy Coufal were married in Abie and moved to the farm purchased by Mr. Smid, five miles south of Bruno, where they since have resided continuously. Mr. Smid's parents later built a home on their son's farm and lived near him until their passing. Seven children, four sons and three daughters, were born to Mr. and Mrs. Smid, two daughters preceding Mr. Smid in death. Surviving are Mrs. Smid, four sons, Edward of Staplehurst, William of Bruno and Robert and Ernest at home, and one daughter, Mrs. James Rech of Ulysses, also six grandchildren. A kind and thoughtful husband and father, Mr. Smid also merited the regard of his friends and neighbor when they say "he was a good man." He was industrious and helpful and conducted his affairs with honesty and prudence. He suffered much when his health became impaired. They sympathy of the entire community is extended to the bereaved.
